Choose Your Palette.
Pick a palette of 3-4 colors. Think in terms of tones: blue tones, earth tones, neutrals, pastels, etc.
Don’t Match. Coordinate.
Start with the youngest's attire and pull colors from their outfit to dress and layer everyone else.
Keep it Simple and Clean.
Muted tones, solids and simple, non-distracting prints don’t pull attention away from the main subjects, only put one person in a pattern.
Think about Texture.
Lace, corduroy, denim, knits, fur collars, and layering vests or sweaters create another dynamic to portraits.
Wear what makes you comfortable.
Chose a favorite top or dress that fits perfectly and reflects who you truly are. You will feel most confident in what you’re comfortable in.
Don’t Forget about the Shoes.
Grab those “Sunday Bests” for your feet. Wear comfortable shoes that compliment the outfit choice. Nothing will throw off your look more than an old pair of shoes or dirty laces.
Let Hair Move.
Long hair can showcase movement in a breeze. Go with a natural flow and encompass your hair.
Accessories give your photographs an added punch. They lend pops of color, personality, and interest. Grab that wool hat or charming dangly earrings for another dimension.
Dress for the Season & Location.
Wear long flowing, light dresses during the summer months; and keep the long sleeves for Fall and Winter
Plan Ahead.
Make sure you’ve given yourself enough time to think about all the details of your session. Get a haircut and practice styling your hair a few days in advance from your session. That way you have time to fix things if you need to.
